Dartmouth Provost Resigns Over Undisclosed AI Use

Dartmouth Provost Santiago Schnell resigned and will leave the university after a faculty committee found that he used AI in academic and public writing without required disclosures, the Valley News reported, in a story republished by VTDigger. President Sian Leah Beilock said the resignation was Schnell's decision.

The committee reviewed Schnell's logs from Dartmouth's Claude service and his emails rather than using AI detection tools. It found that he used Claude to substantially edit a research manuscript, troubleshoot code and generate figures without disclosing that use as required by the journal.

The review also found that Schnell used ChatGPT while preparing a Washington Post opinion piece, contrary to the newspaper's policy. The committee said he was not forthcoming about his AI use and did not provide requested logs from personal AI accounts, though it recommended no disciplinary action.

History professor Matthew Delmont will serve as interim provost through June 2028.
