Opera Introduces WebAI Standard for Running AI Locally in Browsers
Opera introduced WebAI, a new web standard that lets users run AI models directly in its browser without relying on the cloud, TechCrunch reported. WebAI is built to work with a range of open-weight models, such as Google's Gemma, and supports Apple's on-device foundation model on Macs.
The feature is available as an opt-in early preview in Opera One, with Opera GX and the agent-based Opera Neon browser to follow. Opera said developers can add AI features without running AI infrastructure or paying per request, and that data handled by the local model stays on the user's device.
