Ericsson launches ISAC System to detect drones with 5G networks
Ericsson has introduced the Ericsson ISAC System, which adds sensing to mobile networks so they can detect and track drones and other moving objects, including ones not connected to the network, the company said. The system uses sensing capable 5G radios, edge computing, AI and signal processing, and provides tracking data with AI based classification.
The system analyzes radio signals reflected by objects. Multiple mobile network sites transmit and receive sensing signals, allowing the system to view targets from several angles and maintain tracks across its coverage area. Ericsson said validated tests detected micro drones at distances measured in kilometers and produced precise three dimensional positioning.
Ericsson ran trials with AT&T in Arlington, Texas, and demonstrations with Erillisverkot in Helsinki and with Asseco and Play in Poland. Tracking data can be shared through standard interfaces with authorized security and command systems, alongside information from radar and other sensors.
Selected customers will begin small scale commercial pilots focused on sensing in 2027. Ericsson plans broader deployments from 2028 and will add integrated communications as the system moves toward 6G.
