LibreOffice Allows Disclosed LLM Use in Community Code

Oct 29, 2026
The Document Foundation says LibreOffice community contributors may use LLM coding tools if they disclose that use and submit their code for human review. Core developers and students remain prohibited from using LLMs.

The Document Foundation says its policy to keep AI out of LibreOffice's default installation does not prohibit all community contributors from using coding assistants, according to The Register.

Three LibreOffice commits from 2026 disclose LLM assistance. Two April commits credit Claude with helping identify fixes for font sizing issues. A September commit says GitHub Copilot generated a class for a screenshot copy feature, while a related method was written manually with code completion assistance.

The foundation says its core developers do not use LLMs and students are prohibited from using them. It requires other contributors to disclose LLM use and generally discourages the practice, and maintainers review submissions to check code quality and confirm that authors understand their code.
