Surveys Find Widespread AI Chatbot Use Among Teens and Tweens
Nearly two thirds of tweens and teens use AI chatbots, with schoolwork and emotional support among the main uses, NPR reports. Surveys from Common Sense Media and The Jed Foundation also found that chatbot use often begins before the minimum age of 13 required by many services.
Common Sense Media found that nearly half of children ages 9 to 12 had used an AI chatbot or companion. By age 13, nearly three quarters had used one. The Jed Foundation survey of 5,500 students ages 9 to 17 found that 90% had used a chatbot, while nearly two thirds used chatbots for both schoolwork and companionship or during periods of stress, loneliness, anxiety, or feeling overwhelmed.
Students who used AI while experiencing emotional distress were more likely to report poor mental health and wellbeing, along with a history of suicidal thoughts or attempts. Researchers cautioned that the survey data do not establish whether chatbot use contributes to these outcomes or whether students already experiencing distress are more likely to use the tools.
