Anthropic licenses AP election data for Claude

Nov 5, 2026
Anthropic licensed Associated Press content and data to provide current election information through Claude. Financial terms and the duration of the agreement were not disclosed.

Anthropic struck a content and data licensing deal with the Associated Press just before the US midterm elections, two people familiar with the matter told Adweek. On Election Night, Claude showed up-to-the-minute polling information attributed to the AP.

Neither side disclosed the financial terms or the length of the deal. Anthropic did not respond to Adweek's request for comment, and the AP did not comment on the record.

According to Adweek, it is the first content licensing deal Anthropic has struck with a digital publisher. OpenAI has negotiated more than a dozen such deals, including with Axel Springer, News Corp. and The Atlantic. Adweek reported in August that Anthropic believed its use of publisher content was permitted under fair use. Many premium publishers block its crawlers, which Adweek says left Claude short of credible real-time reporting on days such as an election.
