Etsy Bans AI Generated Recipes, Patterns and Instructions

Oct 23, 2026
Etsy will ban AI generated functional guides and bot generated listings while requiring sellers to provide unedited photos of physical items.

Etsy will ban AI generated functional guides, including recipes, patterns and instructions, the company said in a post for sellers. Sellers must create the information that buyers rely on and show a real result made from their instructions.

The marketplace will also prohibit bot generated listings created without human involvement. Listings must include at least one unedited photo of the actual item against a real background, though exceptions apply to some digital, customized, made to order and print on demand products.

Etsy will continue allowing AI generated art when sellers play a clear creative role and disclose their use of AI. The company is also adding image checks during listing creation and a reporting option for potentially misleading AI imagery. Reports will not initially trigger immediate enforcement.
