Google Tests Gemini in Software Engineering Interviews
Google is testing changes to its software engineering interviews that let candidates use Gemini during coding tasks and assess their AI fluency, according to Business Insider. The company has expanded the formats across more teams during 2026, though they remain pilots.
One format includes a code comprehension interview that evaluates prompt engineering and a candidate's ability to work with AI tools. Google requires AI fluency for all software engineering jobs and AI product integration skills for most roles above entry level.
Google is also testing Gemini for transcription and note taking in some interviews held on Google Meet, and is working to let interviewers use it to draft role-tailored feedback. Employees were told not to build their own AI tools or agents for hiring and interviews.
