Texas Sues OpenAI Over ChatGPT Safety and Marketing
The Texas Attorney General's Office sued OpenAI and CEO Sam Altman in Collin County district court on Friday, according to The Texas Tribune. Attorney General Ken Paxton alleges the company deceptively marketed ChatGPT and violated a Texas law requiring digital services to implement child safety features.
The complaint alleges that OpenAI failed to provide sufficient safeguards despite knowing about risks associated with ChatGPT. It claims the chatbot has contributed to harms involving suicide, violence, privacy, addiction among minors and reduced critical thinking.
Paxton is seeking an injunction that would block minors from accessing ChatGPT and require a court appointed evaluator to approve new models before release.
