Tufts Medicine will use Humata Health to process prior authorization requests for select imaging services provided to Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts members.

Tufts Medicine and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts announced in a press release that they will automate prior authorization for select imaging services. Tufts Medicine will use technology from Humata Health to process requests for Blue Cross members, starting with services that include MRI scans.

The system will transmit required clinical and administrative information in minutes rather than days. The organizations plan to extend its use to additional services.

The project is supported by the Massachusetts Health Data Consortium, which operates the New England Healthcare Exchange Network. Tufts Medicine and Blue Cross will use its FHIR infrastructure to exchange data for patient care, referrals and claims processing.
