Reservoir Sues Suno and Anthropic Over AI Training
Reservoir Media filed separate copyright lawsuits against Suno and Anthropic on October 21, according to Music Business Worldwide. Both complaints were filed in the US District Court for the Northern District of California.
Reservoir alleges that Suno copied 1,050 compositions without permission to train its music models. The works include songs associated with Joni Mitchell, Johnny Cash, Madonna and Evanescence. Reservoir seeks more than $186 million across copyright and Digital Millennium Copyright Act claims, as well as an injunction and the destruction of unauthorized copies.
The separate Anthropic complaint alleges that the company copied lyrics from 853 compositions to train Claude and that its models can reproduce or create derivative versions of those lyrics. Reservoir seeks more than $151.4 million across its claims. It also requests an injunction and the destruction of unauthorized copies held in training datasets, internal repositories, model weights and server infrastructure.
